What Employers Are Looking For

Welcome! During our Tuesday cohort meeting, panel speakers Ian Sherk and Jake Koppinger gave us some background about their companies, how they got to where they are and what they look for when hiring people.

Ian Sherk is a 31 year old Canadian who started his career with a degree in business marketing from Eastern Michigan University. Ian is currently the Vice President of Paid Media at Career Now Brands that helps students find high quality trade programs.
Jake Koppinger started his career with an engineering degree from the University of Michigan. Although he did not end up in engineering, it just goes to show that you can start your career anywhere and life will take you where you’re meant to go. Jake is the CEO of FreightRoll that is basically the Uber for freight trucks. FreightRoll helps trucking and vehicle companies find the drivers they need for their jobs.

What Are Employers Looking For?

Employers are paying more attention to attitude and effort than you would think. Both effort and attitude are always under your control, and they’re a determining factor in how you handle your job. Attitude is especially important because it affects you and the people around you. A positive attitude will help you get along with co-workers and mix with the company culture. Laziness can be detrimental to whether or not you get a job, so make sure that you are portraying yourself in a way that showcases the effort you have made. You need to be able to tell a story about your experiences, an approach that was successful and how your performance improved from this experience.

“Your job is what you make of it. You reap what you sow.” – Ian Sherk
